"Dreamscape & Catastrophe"

Professor: Stuart Romm

Year: Fourth-year student project

Collaboration: Site trip to Biloxi and Site Analysis with team of City Planning students from UGA; Pre-conceptual designs with Yunxin Hu; Designed Individually

Precedent: The Fun Palace by Cedric Price; Paragon Casino Resort

Assignment: Based on chosen game of chance, design a casino and hotel with allegories of "virtue and vice" to mix elements of the post-Katrina marshland with the casino design. Make these two seemingly opposite elements join together in harmony. This will complete the "Casino Loop" in the city and provide revenue and tourist attractions to revitalize the city after it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Concept: "DreamScape and Catastrophe"; Machinic vs. Organic; The "Double Dialetic" between Projection of the dreamscape and Authenticity of the culture, Stability of the neighborhoods and Flux of the marsh, the game of chance of a Rubik's cube: disorientation, variety, chance, twisting, probability, randomization, play;

Illusion vs. Cognition
Design: The red spaces in the diagrams represent the projected 'mechanical' casino aura. The green represents the authenticity of the organic, which is the history of the Cajun marsh. These two worlds are twisted and overlapped horizontally and vertically along a linear axis. This twisting of spaces is allegorical to the twisting game of the Rubik's cube. The central intersection forms a vortex, creating a prismatic space. This vortex represents a mixing of the two worlds and has a theater with a projection screen to signify the Projection of the Authentic. In this building, the Organic 'world' is defined by the rustic griddiness of the Cajun bayou and wetlands, and the traditions evident in history of the culture such as fishing, This is architecturally spoken through naturally lit, open-air spaces, materials of stone, sand areas, raw pier wood boardwalks, plants, and a controlled stream running through the hotel. The program of this world includes hanging gardens, spas, a rooftop venue, recreational space, open-air dining, a pool, a gym, and a pierscape facing the marsh. The layout is organized in organic, curving patterns. In contrast, the
Machinic 'world' has the luxurious aura of a Beaux Arts style reform club or library to represent the gaming side of the design. This is shown architecturally through dim lighting, for a cave or grotto-like effect, rich upolstry, deep mahogany, and marble. The programmatic elements include large gaming halls, billiards, bars, a venue for night use, a theater, a night club, and a dessert cafe. The strip of property to the east is half hotel and retail, alternating with pedestrian green space. The Machinic 'world' is laid out in rigorous repetitions to offset the organic patterns of the alternative world.
